Public Pools Open with Silver Springs Pool Dedication

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board will open public pools this weekend with a dedication ceremony at Noon, Saturday, May 29 at Silver Springs Park, 1100 N. Hampton, for the improvements made to its pool area and the addition of new pool play features. An open house will follow from 1 – 5 p.m. at Silver Springs Pool with free public entry.

All seven outdoor pools, including Fassnight Park, 1300 S. Campbell Ave.; Doling Park, 2600 N. Robberson Ave.; Grant Beach Park, 1300 N. Grant St.; Meador Park, 2500 S. Fremont Ave.; Westport Park, 3100 W. Mt. Vernon St.; Silver Springs Park, 1100 N. Hampton Ave.; and the McGee/McGregor Wading Pool at Phelps Grove Park, 1200 E. After this first weekend, pools begin normal operating hours of Thursdays through Sundays.

In addition to the Thursday – Sunday hours, two pool locations have increased operating hours again in 2010, with the support of a $12,000 grant by the Rotary Club of Springfield (Downtown). Fassnight Pool will operate Tuesdays – Sundays, and Grant Beach Pool will open Wednesdays – Sundays, throughout the season. The Rotary Club of Springfield (Downtown) will present a check at this Saturday’s dedication in celebration of the additional hours of operation.

One special pool event is the six-week Splash N’ Sizzle weekends, which runs 5:30 – 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, July 2 – 31 at Doling, Grant Beach and Westport Pools and 5 – 7 p.m. at Silver Springs Pool. Fassnight and Meador Pools will be open from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Saturdays only for the Splash N’ Sizzle weekends. Admission to these six locations is $1 or a canned food item donation for the Ozarks Food Harvest. Extended Splash N’ Sizzle holiday hours include:

Youth, Adult, Senior and Family pool passes for the 2010 summer season are available now. Parents are reminded that they must accompany children eight years of age and younger to all pools. The pools information hotline is 417-864-2099, which is updated throughout the season in the event of cancellations due to inclement weather.

The Silver Springs improvements, which will be highlighted on Saturday, include: a new fence surrounding the pool; expanded shade structures on the pool deck; a new filtration system; a drop slide; zero-depth beach style entry and exit; shaded water bench; spray features in the shallow end of the pool; a dividing wall between the shallow and deep ends of the pool; and a new spring style diving board at the deep end.

The renovations were made possible by the 2006 voter-approved 1/4-cent Parks sales tax for outdoor pool renovations. The total renovation cost was $588,234.
