29th Annual Kids Fun Fishing Day June 5
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board, Missouri Department of Conservation and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World will host the 29th Annual Kids Fun Fishing Day, Saturday June 5 at Sportsman’s Park, 2500 E. Kearny St. The free event will teach children fishing techniques, where they then can put them to the test the next weekend, June 12 & 13, for Free Fishing Weekend in the state of Missouri.
There are two sessions: the first at 9 a.m., with check-in at 8:30 a.m.; the second begins at 10:30 a.m., with check-in at 10 a.m. The event is free for children 3 – 13 years of age. All children must be accompanied by an adult, and children must supply their own rod, reel, bait and stringer for the fish.
The fishing pond has been stocked with catfish and sunfish, making it easier for children to catch. Each child can keep up to four fish. Several activities throughout the day include:
- Teaching children how to cast;
- Identifying fish, hosted by Springfield Conservation Nature Center staff;
- Meet a Pro Fisherman - Mike Eutsler, a Springfield native and owner of Eutsler Outdoors, who also teaches seminars at Bass Pro;
- Sit in a real pro fishing boat;
- Water safety & care skills;
- Learn how to set up a tackle box;
- Fishing for one hour;
- Free soft drinks provided by Ozarks Coca-Cola/Dr. Pepper Bottling Company
For the beginning fisher, a photo opportunity will be available to document their “first fish” with a photo and certificate. All fish caught will participate in a “weigh-in” similar to the professionals. MDC will clean the fish caught and include a list of recipes for frying, baking or grilling. Following each session, names will be drawn for prizes donated by participating sponsors.
The next weekend, June 12 & 13, is Free Fishing Weekend throughout Missouri. A list of eight area lakes that families can fish on and upcoming fishing events will be available at the Fun Family Fishing Day.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for the following day, Sunday, June 6, same times and location.
