For Immediate Release
Fassnight Park Improvements Groundbreaking
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at the east end of Fassnight Park, on the west side of Campbell Avenue to celebrate the beginning of construction on the $5 million Fassnight Waterway/Stormwater Improvement Project.
Funding for the project will be provided by the 2006 County-wide Parks Sales Tax; an EPA Stormwater Infrastructure Grant and a Transportation Enhancement Grant.
The multi-purpose project includes reconstruction of the channel and bridges to reduce flooding, providing water quality benefits and maintaining the historical appearance of the park. Greenway trail and walkway improvements and completion of a section of the Fassnight Creek Greenway Trail will provide new opportunities to enjoy the park and creek.
The General Contractor for the project is Hartman & Company, Inc., with engineering and landscape architecture services provided by Mathews & Associates, Patti Banks Associates and Intuition and Logic.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2011. The project begins a series of improvement projects that will reconstruct and revive several of Springfield’s older parks with particular attention being paid to the special water resources that were originally at the heart of many of our parks. This series of projects will highlight the fact that water resources in Springfield are one of our greatest and most popular natural assets and deserve to be protected and enjoyed for generations to come.
“This project is an exciting quality of life enhancement to Fassnight Park and our stormwater infrastructure that reduces flood hazards and protects water quality,” says Todd Wagner, Springfield’s City Stormwater Engineer.
