Archery Added to Olympic Development Program
The Greater Springfield-Greene County Community Olympic Development Program (CODP) has expanded its program to add the sport of archery, bringing the total number of sport programs to five.
To celebrate, the Springfield-Greene County Park Board will recognize the addition of archery with “Olympic Day” at 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 23, at Mediacom Ice Park, 635 E. Trafficway. Professional instruction from national-level archery coach Steve Cornell will be available for all attendees. The event is free and open to the public.
The local CODP program currently supports 430 youth athletes in the sports of weightlifting, tennis, ice hockey, and volleyball, and has exposed more than 45,370 young people to these sports since 2004.
“Archery becomes our fifth CODP sport and we are delighted to be able to offer opportunities to Springfield-Greene County youth to experience this sport,” said Program Director Linda Dollar. With national-level coach Steve Cornell joining our staff, we could not be more excited for this program to get off the ground.”
Springfield-Greene County is one of seven current CODPs, including: Atlanta, Ga.; Lake County, Ind.; Moorestown, N.J.; San Antonio, Texas; Verona, Wis.; and Park City, Utah.
The mission of CODP is to provide athletes in the region access to the best facilities, programs, coaches and competition in order to enhance their ability to compete in Olympic sports.
