Serious Assault Under Investigation

The Springfield Police Department is investigating an assault that occurred at the intersection of Harrison and Laurel.

The victim Charles V. Loftis, 44, of Springfield, was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Billy Hankins of Springfield was arrested on probable cause for 1st Degree Assault and is being held in the Greene County Jail. Formal charges have not been filed.

Police were called to the intersection of Harrison and Laurel just after 11:30 p.m. According to witnesses there was a disturbance between Loftis and Hankins. The disturbance started at Hankins residence, in the 3000 block of West Harrison, and ended near the intersection where Loftis was struck by a pickup truck driven by Hankins. Hankins was arrested near the scene.
