Fire Recruits Near Academy Completion
A graduation ceremony for the next class of the Springfield Fire Academy will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 12, at Clara Thompson Hall on the campus of Drury University. The 10 graduated recruits will receive their station assignments and begin work with their assigned crews during the week of Aug. 15.
Before the recruits complete their training, they will go through a final live burn exercise at 8 a.m., Monday, Aug. 9, at the northside training center located at 4800 N. Farmer Ave., north of the Fullbright Pump Station and the animal shelter. Though closed to the public, the media is welcome to attend this exercise in advance of the graduation.
The next Fire Academy will begin on Monday, Aug. 16 as a new class of seven recruits begins its formal training. That academy class will graduate and join the ranks of Springfield’s firefighting crews later this year.
Earlier this year, City Council committed to hiring more public safety employees in the Police and Fire departments during the FY2011 budget year, despite an ongoing hiring freeze for General Fund positions now in its 20th month. A Police Academy of 22 recruits is currently in session and will be completed later this year.
