Police Investigate Fatility Crash

At 3:10 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Department responded to a reported “injury crash” at Fort and Lindberg. The crash involved a 2002 Buick Century and a 1987 Honda Accord. The driver of the Accord was westbound on Lindberg and failed to stop for a stop sign for westbound traffic. The Accord was struck in the driver’s side by the Buick which was northbound on Fort. After the initial impact, the Accord was redirected to the north where it ran off the roadway on the west side of Fort street and went through a privacy fence of the residence located at 1305 W. Lindberg. The driver of the Accord suffered a broken arm and a laceration to the head and was transported to a local hospital. The driver and passengers in the Buick did not report any obvious injuries, but were transported to a local hospital to be checked.

During the follow-up investigation, officers learned that the elderly driver of the Honda Accord developed complications due to injuries not readily apparent at the scene. The subject died as a result of those injuries within a few hours of the crash. The names of the drivers are not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin. The investigation continues.
