Botanical Center Holiday Events Continue

The Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center continues to celebrate the holiday season with an upcoming nature ornament making session for kids, a holiday display exhibit and an event this weekend featuring costumed characters.

Holiday Display Exhibit

An ongoing free display in the Center’s lobby through the month of December highlights the rich rail history of Springfield through model trains and seasonal decorations. The 12,700-square foot facility is open 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sundays. The facility is closed on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, and will close at 5 p.m. Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 and New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31.

Santa and Friends Family Event

The event runs 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 18 and noon – 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19, and will feature: storytellers, top of each hour; cookie-decorating for $1, ongoing; natural material ornament making, five for $5, ongoing; costumed characters and pictures with Father Time, ongoing. No charge for photos, but please bring your own camera. Free hot cocoa and candy provided by Friends of the Garden, Inc.

Nature Ornaments for Kids

Find the beauty in dried cones, pods, and other natural materials from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday, Dec. 20, in this ongoing ornament making station. Children four years of age and older can create mini figures and whimsical art, five for $5 per child. No pre-registration is required.

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board completed the Center in fall 2010, which is located in the 114-acre Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, 2400 S. Scenic Ave. For more information, visit or call 417-891-1515.
