Use Caution on Roadways During Holiday Shopping

The Springfield Police Department would like to remind motorists to pay special attention to intersections during afternoon/evening holiday shopping.

Several years ago, a winter storm passed through Springfield on Christmas Eve while residents were shopping. The afternoon traffic, coupled with a winter storm and last minute shoppers created a gridlock in the city that was never seen before and hasn't been seen since. Intersections throughout Springfield were locked down for hours due to motorists who would attempt to travel through the intersection but were caught when the light turned red, not allowing cross traffic to pass.

With winter weather possibly hitting Springfield on this Christmas Eve, the SPD would like to caution motorists to stay out of the intersections and wait for the next cycle of lights before attempting to travel through if it appears they may not make it.
