For Immediate Release
Reminder: City Council Primary is Feb. 22
The City would like to remind Springfield voters that the City Council primary election originally scheduled for Feb. 8 will be held one week from today on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011.
The election date was postponed by a court order issued by the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, at the request of Greene County Clerk Richard Struckhoff. State law (RSMo. 115.024) allows the County Clerk to petition a panel of judges from the Court of Appeals to reschedule or relocate an election due to disaster. Struckhoff cited weather-related concerns over voter access and safety following the Feb. 1 blizzard. Springfield City Council endorsed the postponement in a Feb. 4 vote.
The primary election ballot includes two Springfield City Council races: General Seat C, representing the whole city, and the Zone 3 seat, representing southwest Springfield. Only Springfield residents are eligible to vote in this election. Sample ballots are available on the Greene County website at: www.greenecountymo.org/election/Feb_2011/feb.pdf
The Greene County Clerk's Office will be open Saturday. Feb. 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for anyone wishing to cast an absentee vote in person in the primary election. The deadline for casting an absentee ballot in person at the Clerk's Office is 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 21. The County Clerk's Office will be open on Presidents Day, which is otherwise a holiday for Greene County offices and courts.
Those voting absentee by mail must make sure their written request for a ballot arrives at the County Clerk's Office by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, in order to be processed. Be sure the request is signed, states the reason for voting absentee, and contains the address to which the ballot should be sent. State laws restrict the use of absentee voting to those who have a legal reason, such as absence from the county on election day or physical disability.
Questions about absentee voting should be directed to the County Clerk's Office at (417) 868-4060.
