City Fire Code Prohibits Fireworks

The Springfield Police Department would like to remind the public about City laws concerning fireworks during the week leading up to and including the fourth of July.

According to section 3301.1.3 of the adopted City Fire Code, the possession, manufacture, storage, offer or exposure for sale, selling at retail, handling and discharge of fireworks is prohibited. Residents are allowed to use novelty items which are described as snappers, party poppers, toy smoke devices or glowworms, and sparklers. Please ensure children are watched even while using novelty items as the temperatures on sparklers can exceed 1100 degrees.

If an officer is called to a home regarding a disturbance or violation of the ordinance all fireworks could be seized, but every attempt will be made to gain cooperation first. However, if officers are called back to the same location, the officer may confiscate the items and could issue a summons.

Please take the time to celebrate the fourth of July, but do so in accordance with the law.
