Dan Kinney Center Groundbreaking
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board will host a groundbreaking at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2, for the Dan Kinney Family Center at Dan Kinney Park, 2701 S. Blackman Road.
The two-story facility will feature: a community room; gymnasium with walking/jogging track; cardio/weight training; game room; child care room; aerobics room; café area; and locker rooms.
The approximately 35,279-square foot facility will be the third family center in the park system, serving the more than 275,000 citizens of Greene County. The building is being designed to meet LEED Silver Certification and also is designed for future gymnasium and aquatics additions. The architects for the project are Hood-Rich, Inc.; mechanical/electrical engineers are Smith-Goth Engineers, Inc.; LEED consultants are Architectural Energy Corporation; general contractor is Branco Enterprises, Inc.
The 18.3-acre Dan Kinney Park also features the departments' first modern universal design playground, picnic tables made from recycled plastic, tree plantings, shade structures, open play field, walking trail looping the park and parking. In addition, construction of a Miracle League Field is currently underway, with an expected opening in mid-October. The field will have a special playing surface allowing easy access for wheelchairs, individuals using walkers and anyone who finds it difficult to walk due to health issues and/or blindness.
Partners developing this park are City Utilities, Greene County, City of Springfield, and the citizens of Greene County.
The new park sits on a total tract of 121.5-acres, which is also home to Springfield Fire Station No. 12 and operations for City Utilities of Springfield. The Fire station has a community room and walking track available for public use.
