News Release

For Immediate Release

Walnut Street Closure Until March 2012

Walnut Street, between Kimbrough Avenue and John Q. Hammons Parkway, will be closed beginning at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 and will remain closed until the street construction project in the block is complete in March 2012.  Local traffic will be allowed to access the businesses and residences within the closed area from one end or the other, depending on where work is occurring.  A sidewalk on one side of the street will remain open.

The street construction work includes reconstruction of water and gas lines throughout the block, installation of additional storm water facilities within the east half of the block, reconstruction of all sidewalk for ADA compliance, installation of pedestrian street lamps, and narrowing the roadway in the middle of the block with trees planted in a wider margin between the curb and sidewalk.

The project continues the Walnut Street improvements previously constructed between Campbell Avenue and Kimbrough Avenue and between John Q. Hammons Parkway and National Avenue. The project completes a pedestrian connection between Missouri State University campus and the downtown Springfield neighborhood. Hunter Chase and Associates is the contractor on the project. The project is funded by a Federal Transportation Enhancement grant, 1/8 Cent Transportation Sales Tax, ¼ Cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax, Storm water funds, Historic Walnut Street, and Missouri State University.
