Businesses: Care Needed When Accepting Credit Cards, Checks

The Springfield Police Department is reminding businesses to take extra precautions when accepting credit/debit cards and checks from customers. Police have seen an increase in the number of fraudulent credit devices and checks being presented to local businesses.

Businesses are encouraged to ask for proper identification on all transactions. Often those possessing stolen financial instruments will either leave or ask for the instruments back after being asked for identification.

Legitimate customers are asked to work with businesses and provide proper identification when using a credit devices or check when conducting business. The checking of identification protects both the customer and the business.
