Collapsed Building Already Slated for Demolition

City of Springfield Building Development Services (BDS) inspectors have surveyed the collapsed building at 948 N. Main and confirm the property owner is taking follow-up action. The owner will continue with previous plans to demolish the vacant property. BDS director Chris Straw said the City had received service request calls on the property prior to the collapse. The owner reported he was reviewing bids from a contractor to do the demo work. The owner told Straw this morning that utilities to the building had already been turned off.

No one was injured in the collapse, but the 900 block of North Main remains closed until noon. Straw says a section of Nichols Ave. from Main to Lyon will remain closed to through traffic as demolition continues. That could take a few days, he says. Straw also said City Utilities plans to move a power line to a street light to ensure safety during demolition.

"The property owner met us onsite this morning and we were pleased with their prompt and respectful response," Straw said.
