Park Board Offers Cooling Centers, Extended Hours

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board is extending pool hours and opening three cooling centers this week due to a Heat Advisory issued by the National Weather Service.

Grant Beach Pool, 1300 S. Grant Ave., and Westport Pool, 3100 W. Mt Vernon St., will remain open until 8 p.m., Thursday, June 28, through Saturday, June 30.

Fassnight, Silver Springs and Meador pools follow normal business hours: 1 to 6:30 p.m. Admission to all outdoor pools is $2.75 adults, $2.25 kids 17 and under. After 5:30 p.m. admission drops to $1 or a canned food item. All food collected goes to Ozarks Food Harvest.

Those needing a break from the heat are welcome to spend time in free cooling centers available during regular business hours Thursday through Saturday at:

Seating is available at all three locations.

Tennis players are invited to take advantage of late hours at outdoor tennis courts during the Heat Advisory. The lights will remain on until 11 p.m. at Perry Tennis Courts, at National and Bennett, and Gillenwaters Tennis Complex, 3635 S. Jefferson Ave., this Thursday through Saturday.

Parks offers many other heat-friendly activities, regardless of Heat Advisory status, including open skating at Mediacom Ice Park, open tennis at Cooper Tennis Complex, open gyms at Oak Grove Community Center and O'Reilly-Tefft Gymnasium, canoe and kayak rentals at Lake Springfield Boathouse, and workout and recreation equipment at Chesterfield and Doling Family Centers.
