ASA Softball Tournament opening ceremony today, continues through Aug. 5

Twenty-eight girls’ 14-and-under softball teams are in Springfield this week for a national tournament.
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board is hosting the 2012 Amateur Softball Association Girls’ 14U “B” Fast Pitch Northern National Championship today through Sunday, Aug. 5, at Killian Sports Complex, 2141 E. Pythian St., Springfield.
The teams represent Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, as well as metropolitan ASA affiliates in Chicago, Houston and Kansas City. Two teams hail from Springfield.
The tournament’s opening ceremony is tonight, Aug. 1, 7:30 p.m. at Killian Stadium. All 28 teams will march onto the field for introductions and remarks from local officials. Pool play begins Thursday, Aug. 2, at 9 a.m. Double-elimination bracket play begins Friday, Aug. 3 at 9 a.m. The championship series begins Sunday, Aug. 5, at 9 a.m.
Daily admission to the tournament is $5. Tournament passes are $20.
