Outdoor Pool Season Ending, Dog Swim Coming

A very busy season at Springfield-Greene County Park Board's six outdoor pools begins winding down Sunday, with two pools remaining open on weekends until Labor Day.

Sunday, Aug. 12, is the last day of the season for Silver Springs Pool, Meador Pool, Westport Pool and McGee/McGregor Wading Pool. The outdoor pool season coincides with the Springfield Public Schoolscalendar. School starts Aug. 15.

Fassnight and Grant Beach pools both remain open Monday, Aug. 13 and Tuesday, Aug. 14, 1-6:30 p.m. These two pools will reopen open regular hours Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 2 as well as the Labor Day Splash n' Sizzle event, Monday, Sept. 3, 1 – 6:30 p.m.

Fassnight Pool is also open for Back-to-School Splash n' Sizzle events Friday, Aug. 24 and Friday, Aug. 31, 4 – 10 p.m.

Admission to Splash n' Sizzle is $1 or a canned food item. Normal pool admission is $2.75 adults, $2.25 kids age 3-17. After 5:30 p.m. admission to all pools drops to $1 or a canned food item. All food collected goes to Ozarks Food Harvest.

Marc Baker, Aquatics Supervisor for the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, said open swim attendance had topped 76,000 through the end of July, up slightly from the same period last year.

"We're as busy as we've ever been," said Baker. "We usually get a surge right when the pool opens, and again after 5:30 when we take canned food donations for admission. Nearly 12,000 pounds of canned food has already been donated to Ozarks Food Harvest this year, and it looks like we'll beat last year's donation mark."

Labor Day is the last day for humans to swim in Springfield's outdoor pools this season. Canines, however, are invited to dog paddle in Fassnight Pool Tuesday, Sept. 4, 4-7 p.m. at Dog Swim IX. Proof of vaccination is required and preregistration is strongly recommended. Registration is $8 per dog and dog owner; additional humans are $3. All proceeds benefit Cruse Dog Park, Springfield's first off-leash dog park.
