Jenny Lincoln Playground Ribbon Cutting Friday

The Kiwanis Club of Downtown Springfield and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board will dedicate the new Jenny Lincoln Park playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Nov. 9, 10:30 a.m. at downtown Springfield’s Jenny Lincoln Park, 300 E. Harrison.

The new universal playground includes swings, slides, ramps, platforms and climbing areas and features full accessibly tochildren of all abilities.

The new playground was made possible through a generous donation from the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Springfield, following the club’s two-year fundraising campaign.

“We needed more playground equipment at Jenny Lincoln Park and the Kiwanis Club stepped up,” said Miles Park, Assistant Director of the Springfield-Greene County Park Board.

“The playground incorporates a play component and an exercise component— not that the kids would notice a difference, because it’s all play to them. The equipment helps develop upper and lower body strength, balance and cognitive abilities. It’s play, but it’s also exercise.”

The Kiwanis Club of Downtown Springfield presented a $100,000 donation to the Park Board in July 2011. Ground was broken Nov. 9, 2011. The playground will be dedicated one year to the day after the groundbreaking.

Park Board funds augmented the $110,822 project. The Park Board also worked to nearly double the amount of parking available for Jenny Lincoln Park, adding 12 parking stalls — two of them accessible — to the existing 15.
