City Seeks Input on College Street Corridor

Planning for the College Street Corridor between Grant Avenue and Kansas Expressway continues with a public engagement event 5:30 – 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Abundant Life Church, located at the northeast corner of Park Central Square.

Discussion for the first of three meetings will center on concept planning for the proposed streetscape, Route 66 Roadside Park, and gateway elements. The concept plan is follow–up to the recently completed College Street Corridor Plan adopted by City Council this past August. The plan called for the improvements to be discussed, and the current process will develop the look and feel of the proposed improvements. Input gained through this process will also provide guidance for future improvements along former Route 66 as the community begins to capitalize on the economic development potential of the Route 66 phenomena. Public engagement will include a visual preference survey whereby participants express their preference for optional categories in determining the "personality" of the corridor after viewing images of existing facilities in Springfield as well as other communities.

The Abundant Life Church facility is the former Fox Theater and is located on the first Route 66 alignment through Springfield. The History Museum will provide displays portraying Springfield's role as the "Birthplace of Route 66." Everyone is invited to help continue the planning effort for College Street and Route 66 by participating in the event.
