Environmental Affordability Task Force to Present Report Today
Members of the citizen-based Springfield-Greene County Unfunded Environmental Affordability Task Force will present a report to Springfield City Council, Greene County Commission and the Board of Public Utilities today at noon at the Springfield-Greene County Public Safety Center, 330 W. Scott St.
City Manager Greg Burris convened the group late last year to review and evaluate the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' (MDNR) current community affordability framework.
The group is concerned with the community's ability to afford to implement the various anticipated unfunded environmental mandates, most of which are driven by federal requirements.
The report provides an estimate of the total potential cost to comply with all of the known environmental mandates.
The task force will ask for endorsement of City Council, Greene County and City Utilities in sending the report and a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and MDNR. The draft letter asks them to partner to develop guidelines and programs to achieve a mutual goal of clean air and water, but at a cost the Springfield-Greene County community can afford.
