City Clerk Receives Referendum Petition

A referendum petition with about 2000 signatures opposing the Feb. 25 decision to rezone property at Grand and Campbell to allow for commercial retail has been delivered to the Springfield City Clerk's Office for possible certification.

If at least 1,787 signatures are certified as being from registered city voters, City Council must opt to either repeal the rezoning or send it to voters. If it goes to voters, the zoning change would be put on hold until the next municipal election in August.

If for some reason the certification and vote process by Council and the Clerk would go past May 28, the next available election is November. The average cost of an election is $80,000-$100,000. The City is responsible for the payment of the election.
