Parks Offers Wide Variety of Summer Camps

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board has a variety of kids' day camps and overnight trips planned for this summer, ranging from school-based day camps to sports training camps to overnight wilderness camps. Parents are encouraged to register early, as space is limited in some programs.

The Park Board's SPARC (School-Parks Are Reaching Communities) program offers two early registration events for the popular Ritter Springs, SPARC, Summer Quest, 360 and Wrap-Around. Early Registration is:

Thursday, April 4, 4:30-7:30 p.m., at McBride Elementary, 5005 S. Farm Road 135
Monday, April 8, 4:30-7:30 p.m., at Doling Family Center, 301 E. Talmage St.

Participation in a registration event is not required to register. Phone numbers and other details are included in individual camp descriptions below. Please call for details.

Numerous additional summer sports leagues, clinics, day programs, classes and special events not included here are listed in the latest edition of The Park Bench, the Park Board's program magazine, available for free at Park Board facilities, Springfield-Greene County Library District locations or online at parkboard.org.

Meador Park Fast Pitch Softball Showcase Team Camp
Two-day camp features competitive team drills and game-play situations. Register by May 31.

Outdoor Initiatives Camp Challenge Trips:
Youth two-night supervised tent camping trips. Depart from Tom Watkins Center. Includes tents and equipment, meals, snacks, and transportation. Showers at both locations. Register a week in advance.

  • July 9 – 11: Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park: Canyon gorge, creek wading and water chutes, Elephant Rocks State Park, Fort Davidson Civil War Historical Site and Taum Sauk.
  • July 23 – 25: Ozark National Scenic Riverways: Alley Springs and Mill, Jacks Fork or Current River, Round Springs and Cave, creek wading and water activities.

Outdoor Initiatives Science of the Outdoors!
New for 2013! Discovery Center of the Ozarks partners with Outdoor Initiatives for two science-oriented camping adventures! Campers spend Monday at the Discovery Center, exploring wilderness safety, an ecosystem overview and some of the science they may encounter on the trip. Tuesday morning, campers and staff are whisked off to a 3-day, 2-night adventure with outdoor exploration and scientific interpretation, including star-gazing, kayaking, geology, plant identification, animal track identification and more! Fee includes transportation, tents and equipment, T-shirt and most meals (students must bring a sack lunch Monday and Tuesday.) Space is limited—register at least one week in advance.

Date: June 24 – 27: Ha Ha Tonka State Park: Camp/Dutch Oven cookery, canoeing or kayaking, geocaching, castle ruins, karst and springs environmental education, nature center, hiking and camping.
Aug. 5 – 8: Prairie State Park: Bison, elk and deer study, camp/Dutch Oven cookery, nature center, prairie life, star gazing, hiking and camping.

Rivercut Golf Course Junior Youth Golf Camp
A week of fun and golf. Learn putting, chipping, irons,woods, driver and rules, plus a DVD with practice drills.

Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park "Garden Gang" Summer Camp
May is the perfect time to start a garden! Learn about where food comes from, how plants grow, and just how important farms really are. Each day we will have interactive lessons, games, and story times.

SPARC Ritter Springs Day Camp
Outdoor weekday camp at Ritter Springs Park, near Fantastic Caverns. Campers will hike, canoe, fish, swim, creek walk, go on field trips and explore caves. Each week has a special theme to add to this outdoor adventure. Fees include bus transportation to and from Ritter Springs Park from pick-up locations.

SPARC Summer Quest Day Camp
Summer day camp for middle schoolers. Awesome field trips include canoeing, paintball and White Water. Every day mixes action-packed activities, lunch cookouts, team challenges and much more. Campers will be transported from Field Elementary to Carver Middle School.

SPARC 360 Day Camp
Going into 6th or 7th Grade? This is the camp for you. Join the 360 Team for adventurous field trips, exciting team activities, swimming and hang out with friends. Space is limited to first 30 participants.

SPARC Wrap-Around Camp
Don't hang around the house this summer — come swim, take field trips, enjoy crafts and exciting games during your summer break. Buses will transport Summer School students from McGregor Elementary to Nichols Park.

Valley Water Mill Equestrian Center Youth Summer Camp
Kids are immersed in equestrian activities! Daily barn chores, riding, grooming and handling lessons are combined with crafts, obstacle courses horse soccer and other activities. Each student is responsible for their assigned horse for the week. Campers showcase their skills during a practice "Horse Show" on Friday. Bring your own a lunch and snack. Camps may be repeated as students progress at their own rate.
