Agencies collaborate on youth fire setting prevention
In an effort to curb youth fire setting, Springfield, Nixa, Willard, Ozark, Battlefield, Logan-Rogersville and Branson are among the fire departments that have joined with Mercy to form the Southwest Missouri Youth Fire Intervention Coalition.
Details about the new program will be unveiled during a news conference scheduled for Wednesday, May 29th at 10 a.m. The news conference will take place at the south entrance to the Springfield Regional Police and Fire Training Center at 2620 W. Battlefield Rd.
According to the United States Fire Administration, 75% of children between the ages of 3 and 17 experiment with fire. The median age they begin experimenting with fire is 5 and 53% of all arson arrests are children. For every 100 people who die in fires in the United States, 24 are killed because of children playing with fire. For children, interest in fire is natural; setting fires is not!
