May accident turned fatal

At 3:05 p.m. on May 13, 2013, officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of E. Catalpa St. and S. Oak Grove Ave.

It appeared that a 2000 Buick LeSabre driven by Lewis G. Beasley, 74, of Springfield, was traveling westbound on Catalpa and a 2009 Dodge Ram driven by Molly A. Carter, 16, of Springfield, was traveling northbound on Oak Grove. Oak Grove is a through street. East and westbound traffic on Catalpa have stop signs at the intersection. The western part of Catalpa is offset to the north of the eastern portion. Both stop signs were present at the time of the on-scene investigation. The front of the Dodge collided with the left side of the Buick. There was substantial intrusion on the left side of the Buick. The front right corner of the Dodge appeared to have made first contact with the driver's door or just rear of the driver's door of the Buick.

Beasley sustained serious injuries and succumbed to those injuries at 10:30 p.m. on June 2 in a Springfield hospital.

The accident is still being investigated, and no charges have been filed.
