Meet local Olympic hopeful Greg West June 13
2014 Olympic hopeful Greg West will meet with the media and demonstrate his bobsled and skeleton training gear Thursday, June 13, 10 a.m. at Mediacom Ice Park, 635 E. Trafficway.
West, 27, has been involved in bobsled and skeleton since 2010, when he began training at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York. He soon began placing in national and international competitions, including the European Cup, the International Cup, the America's Cup and the World Cup. West recently took sixth place in the 2013 National Championships in Lake Placid and is currently a member of the USA Skeleton Development Team.
A native of Rogersville, West played football for Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas 2006-2009. He is home training this summer at Mediacom Ice Park with Joe Combs, Strength and Conditioning coach with the Greater Springfield Community Olympic Development Program. West's summer training includes strength and conditioning as well as sled training, using specialized equipment and rigging on the ice rink.
West will take part in the USA Bobsled and Skeleton Scouting Combine and Tryouts Saturday, July 13, at Logan-Rogersville High School and Crossfit Springfield. This is one of 13 bobsled and skeleton combine events held across the country this summer. Area athletes interested in testing their skills for bobsled or skeleton are encouraged to take part.
