Federal grants leverage local funds for street, stormwater projects
Springfield Public Works will complete $1.35 million in downtown street and trail improvements next year for only $270,000 in local tax funds, thanks to four federal enhancement grants totaling $1.08 million granted in December 2012.
The 1/4-Cent Capital Improvement Project and 1/8-Cent Transportation sales taxes will provide $270,000 in local funding for the projects, which are located on Commercial Street, Jefferson Avenue, Phelps Street and Jordan Creek at West Meadows.
The breakdown is as follows:
- Commercial Street – Federal $320,000/City $80,000
- Jefferson Avenue – Federal $320,000/City $80,000
- Phelps Street – Federal $200,000/City $50,000
- Jordan Creek at West Meadows – Federal $240,000/City $60,000.
The total length of street improvements, sidewalks and trails funded through these grants is about 5,600 feet, or a little over a mile (by centerline). The street improvements will include updated lighting, stormwater improvements, utility repair, pavement resurfacing, and sidewalk replacement. The new trail will serve the area to the north of College Street in the West Meadows area of Jordan Valley Park. The projects will be constructed in 2014.
