Outdoor Initiatives schedule for August, September

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board's Outdoor Initiatives offers a variety of outdoor and nature-based programs throughout the end of summer and early fall for youth, families and adults, including:

PaddleBoard/Kayak instruction
Basic instruction in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) or kayaking, then float on your own. Register by Tuesday before.
Outdoor Initiatives at Valley Water Mill Park 833-8647

Giboney Cave Tours
Explore the myths, facts and history of Doling Park's Giboney Cave. Shoes may get muddy on Walking Tours. You will get very muddy and wet on the in-depth Tunnel Tours. All tours subject to bats and weather. Groups of 10+ may register and pay in advance of tour date.

Day Trip to Wilson's Creek National Battlefield
Tour the museum and explore the National Battlefield. Includes transportation and depart from the Springfield-Greene County Park Board's main office at 1923 N. Weller. Bring your own sack lunch, snacks and water. Don't forget your camera! Register by one week before trip.

Outdoor Days at Lake Springfield
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board partners with Bass Pro Shops for two days of exciting outdoor recreation & adventure opportunities during the annual Outdoor Fitness Festival. Whether you're a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a beginner, this event is for you. Sample 1840's life with demonstrations by the James River Mountain Man Rendezvous. Check out the latest in camping gear, including off-road and "green" products. Hands-on/assisted canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding. Pontoon boat rides, fishing, trail walks and more. Activities hosted by Wonders of Wildlife, Missouri Department of Conservation and the Park Board's Outdoor Initiatives.

Camping Weekend at Lake Springfield
Early fall camping during Outdoor Days at Lake Springfield. Camp out in your own camper or tent. Restrooms and water available. (Sorry, no camper hook-ups or showers.) Bring your own gear and food, concessions available. Activities include: campfire Saturday night, canoeing, crafts, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, primitive skills and more. Registration required by Sept. 3; on-site registration only if space is available.
