National men's softball tournament brings 51 teams to Springfield

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board,with support from the Springfield Amateur Softball Association, hosts the 2013 Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Men's "D" Slow Pitch Northern National Championship tournament Friday, Aug. 30 through Sunday, Sept. 1, at Killian Sports Complex, 2141 E. Pythian Ave., Springfield.

Some 51 qualifying softball teams, representing 13 states, will spend the weekend in Springfield for the championship tournament. Of the teams, six are from the Springfield metro area.

Tournament play begins Friday, Aug. 30, 7p.m., and continues all day and evening Saturday, Aug. 31, and all morning and afternoon Sunday, Sept. 1. The Championship game takes place at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Each team plays a minimum of two games.

The Park Board has hosted 34 ASA National Championship tournaments since 1967 at Meador, Cooper and Killian Sports Complexes. In that time, Parks has earned the esteemed James Farrell ASA Award of Excellence 16 times, indicating that attending ASA officials, umpires and teams rated each tournament with a score of 95 percent or higher.

Every year, Park Board facilities host more than 50 national, regional, state and local tournaments in softball, baseball, soccer, hockey, tennis, volleyball and golf, generating an estimated $13-15 million annually for the local economy.

Admission to the tournament is $6 per day, or $15 for the whole tournament.
