City, West Central Neighborhood Association to sponsor neighborhood clean-up Saturday

Residents and/or property owners in the West Central Neighborhood are invited to participate in a neighborhood clean-up event 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.

Trash, junk, scrap metal, furniture, mattresses, brush and leaves will be accepted for disposal at Campbell Elementary School, 506 South Grant Ave. Tires, electronics and household chemicals and paints will not be accepted.

The City and West Central Neighborhood Association encourage residents to take advantage of this free and convenient opportunity to dispose of trash, brush and leaves.

"We encourage West Central neighbors to address overgrown fence rows, backyards and the alley adjacent to your property by mowing, cutting down, trimming and disposing of all brush and related debris," said City of Springfield Senior Planner Randall Whitman.

Of significant concern in West Central is the alley between Nettleton Avenue and Newton Avenue, from Mount Vernon Street to Lombard Street.
"This alley is overgrown with brush, trash has accumulated and the entire area has become a haven for criminals. We are asking neighbors whose property is adjacent to the alley for their help to make this area a cleaner, safer and friendlier place to live," Whitman added.

After the Nov. 9 West Central Neighborhood Clean-Up, City inspectors will begin a sweep in the area to enforce all neighborhood nuisance ordinances. Nuisances such as weeds, brush, inoperable vehicles, trash, junk and dangerous buildings (including out-buildings) will be targeted.
