City ceremony on Friday to honor veterans

The City of Springfield will host a reception honoring City Council members, City employees and retirees who have served in the United States Armed Forces, at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 8 at Springfield's Transportation Management Center, on the Public Works compound at 1107 W. Chestnut Expressway.

"Veterans come from all walks of life and all backgrounds, and through their service they have made an enormous contribution to our nation," says Greg Burris, City Manager. "We sincerely thank those who serve, or have served, from the greatest generation of WWII vets to the newly returning veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan."

A granite monument located on the Public Works Compound was dedicated in 2011. The monument has the seals of the five branches of service on the back and, on the front, the inscription:

"As a tribute to all veterans, the City of Springfield dedicated this Flag Plaza November 10, 2011. All gave some; some gave all. God bless America."

The event is open to the public and the media is invited to attend.
