Planning & Development
The Department of Planning and Development provides services related to the physical development of the community. We work with citizens and other departments to plan orderly growth in our community.
The City of Springfield is committed to managing growth, to efficiently and effectively using public and private resources, and to achieving a balance between public and private development goals.
Mission Statement
To improve the quality of life for current and future generations through implementation of creative planning and development strategies and effective citizen involvement.
A Plan for the Next 20 Years
Springfield's previous Comprehensive Plan, Vision 20/20, was created in 1996 and was last updated in 2004. The City has experienced significant changes in the last 15 years and some of the initiatives and recommendations from Vision 20/20 are becoming outdated. This can lead to poor planning and missed development opportunities.
In June 2019, the City started the process of updating the Comprehensive Plan. This update, called Forward SGF, will account for changes in the past 15 years as well as address future needs. The new plan was adopted by City Council in November 2022. The City is currently in the Implementation Phase of Forward SGF, which will involve updating a series of City Codes that regulate the development of land and installation of public infrastructure.
