Planning & Development
The Department of Planning and Development provides services related to the physical development of the community. We work with citizens and other departments to plan orderly growth in our community.
The City of Springfield is committed to managing growth, to efficiently and effectively using public and private resources, and to achieving a balance between public and private development goals.
To improve the quality of life for current and future generations through implementation of creative planning and development strategies and effective citizen involvement.
Springfield's most recent Comprehensive Plan, Vision 20/20, was created in 1996 and was last updated in 2004. The City has experienced significant changes in the last 15 years and some of the initiatives and recommendations from Vision 20/20 are becoming outdated. This can lead to poor planning and missed development opportunities.
In June 2019, the City started the process of updating the Comprehensive Plan. This update, called Forward SGF, will account for changes in the past 15 years as well as address future needs. The new plan will go before City Council for adoption in fall 2022.
Issues & Opportunities Report Available for Review
The Issues and Opportunities Report (DRAFT) looks at existing conditions in the City of Springfield. It identifies critical issues and opportunities that should be addressed by the Comprehensive Plan. This report serves as a foundation of Forward SGF by highlighting priorities, potentials, and key issues that need to be improved moving forward.
