The International Fire Code, as adopted by the City of Springfield, requires businesses to install portable fire extinguishers. This includes apartment buildings and other multi-family structures with more than two units.
Where they should be installed:
Within 75 feet of travel.
Within 30 feet of commercial cooking equipment.
In areas where flammable or combustible liquids are stored, used or dispensed.
Special-hazard areas, including but not limited to laboratories, computer rooms and generator rooms, where required by the fire code official.
Fire extinguishers should be in a conspicuous location.
They should be unobstructed and unobscured.
Cabinets used to house portable fire extinguishers should not be locked.
Extinguishers weighing less than 40 pounds should be no more than 5 feet above the floor. Extinguishers weighing more than 5 feet should be no more than 3.5 feet above the floor.
In apartments, extinguishers may be installed in individual units to reduce theft and vandalism.
The type and size of extinguisher required varies based on the type of business. For more information, contact a Fire Marshal at 417-874-2300 or view the code online.
