Installs and Maintains Smoke Alarms
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students should know where smoke alarms should be place and how to maintain them.
Time needed: 15 minutes
Supplies needed: Smoke alarm,
Handouts, tape
Activity:
- Ask the students, “does anyone know the best way to protect yourself from getting hurt or killed in fire?” (Having enough working smoke alarms)
- Explain to children where smoke alarms should be installed (in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home)
- Give them each a handout and ask them to draw where the smoke alarms should go. Once complete, review the correct answers (in each bedroom, in the hallway on each level)
- Explain to children how to maintain their alarms: test battery monthly, replace battery yearly, replace alarms every 10 years.
- Show children how to test the alarm.
- Pass around the alarm and have the children take turns testing it.
