The Springfield Police Department and local apartment complexes are launching an effort to expand the Neighborhood Watch program to Springfield apartment dwellers.
Called Apartment Watch, the program “teaches apartment managers and staff how to be the eyes and ears of the police,” says Police Officer Mark Priebe. Similar to SPD’s Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch programs, Apartment Watch offers education about crime prevention and creating safer environments.
Golden Pond Apartments, 3030 W. Republic Road, is the first apartment community to adopt the program. Management there completed SPD’s Apartment Watch training, upgraded security and made other improvements at the complex late last year. The complex now has signs posted around their property denoting their membership. The Villages at Nathanael Greene, 1950 S. Scenic, began the process of becoming an Apartment Watch community last fall.
“We want to do everything we can to make our residents to feel safe,” says Susan Summersby, the complex’s community director.
