The former MFA Grain Silos located at 310 E. Phelps Street and 524 N. Boonville Avenue in downtown Springfield, vacant since 2000, are currently owned by Missouri State University and leased to Vertical Innovations Inc. for adaptive reuse as a vertical agriculture and urban farming research primarily for produce.
The approximately 0.80 acre site contains 30 grain silos, two grain elevators, a vacant substation, and a retired railroad spur.
Plans are for a phased approach beginning with the environmental cleanup currently in process to remediate lead paint, asbestos containing materials, and remove water in the lower levels to prepare the facility for food processing.
The property is currently enrolled in the State of Missouri Department of Natural Resources Brownfields Voluntary Cleanup Program.
The City’s Brownfields program has provided the following assistance to the project to-date:

Phase II (Asbestos and Lead Paint Survey)
