Training and Safety

Training is one of the most important functions of a modern fire department.  In order for the Springfield Fire Department to fulfill its mission of service to the community, the Training Division must monitor changing environments and requirements to ensure personnel are adequately trained to respond safely to any emergency. The mission of the Training Division is to enhance customer service delivery by providing safe, high quality, progressive, and effective training, education, and professional development programs to emergency service personnel.

The Training Division, which consists of an Assistant Chief of Training, a Special Operations Battalion Chief and two Training Captains, provides and oversees initial and ongoing training of all Springfield Fire Department personnel.  This includes:
  • Daily training of over 200 Operations Division personnel
  • 14-week basic training academy for recruits
  • 6-week advanced training academy
  • Multi-company and company drills
  • Continuing education for all Department personnel and outside agencies
