Approved by voters in 2016, the Battlefield and Fremont Intersection and Roadway Improvement Project involves the widening of Fremont Avenue to five lanes between Battlefield Road and Sunset Street, including the construction of sidewalk on the east side of Fremont Avenue and a multi-use path on the west side. Sidewalks and multi-use path will continue through the Battlefield Road & Fremont Avenue Intersection providing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks throughout the project limits.
Battlefield Road will be widened to include dual left turn lanes from Battlefield Road onto Fremont Avenue. New traffic signals will installed at the intersection of Battlefield Road and Fremont Avenue and at the intersection of Fremont Avenue and the Mall Entrance.
Also included is the construction of new City Utilities gas and water facilities and the replacement of a sanitary sewer main. In advance of the project, City Utilities replaced deteriorating wood transmission poles with new steel poles in 2019.
“The overall goal of the project is to increase capacity and improve traffic flow in one of our busiest retail areas. Widening Fremont north of Battlefield and providing an additional northbound lane is expected to help reduce the bottlenecks along Battlefield.”
~ Jonathan Peitz Public Works Project Manager
Anticipated Traffic Impacts:
Motorists can expect overnight closures of Fremont Avenue as well as various lane shifts and lane closures on Fremont and Battlefield. Access to all businesses in the area will be maintained.
