Mayor's Commission for Children is committed to encouraging and supporting the development of early childhood programs in Springfield and educating the community about the necessity of early childhood education. Since our inception in 2004, we've worked quietly but persistently to mobilize the community to address and impact systemic issues that affect our youngest citizens and therefore the future and well-being of our city. One of the ways in which we do this is through our Kindergarten Readiness study, which is used to assess the level of preparation among kindergarten students and identify points of concern as well as progress. Our goal is to reduce the number of children not ready for school to 10% by 2023.

In addition, we continuously collect and distribute data to educate the community of the threats, needs, and progress in relation to early childhood in Springfield. We are partners with Springfield Public Schools, Parents as Teachers, and OACAC Head Start through whom we advocate for and help implement programs and initiatives focused on reducing poverty and increasing education, based on the data we collect and analyze.
