City issues Request for Qualifications for design of Springfield Art Museum renovation and expansion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The City of Springfield is soliciting qualification statements from firms interested in providing architectural services for the renovation and expansion of the Springfield Art SAM RenderingMuseum located at 1111 East Brookside Drive in Springfield.

In 2018, the Springfield Art Museum launched a visionary 30-year Master Plan for its building and grounds. The goal of this plan was to reimagine the Museum as a 21st century civic asset by expanding educational and public programming space and creating strong physical and aesthetic connections between the Museum grounds, adjacent park space and greenway trail. While the scope of the Master Plan was limited to the Museum’s building and grounds, it was to be understood in the context of a larger plan to link the Museum to other parts of the community through parks and trails.

The Request for Qualifications and accompanying exhibits can be viewed at springfieldmo.gov/RFQ. Qualified Architecture firms desiring consideration are invited to submit their digital Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29 via email to [email protected]

Most recently, the Museum has seen improvements to its grounds including stormwater improvements and naturalization of Fassnight Creek to address flood risks to the Museum and adjacent homes. The Museum also recently completed the first phase of parking lot relocation and improvements and a connection to the Fassnight Greenway Trail is planned to begin later this year.

“We are very proud of what the City and the Art Museum have been able to accomplish thus far and excited about continuing our work on improving and expanding the Museum building and grounds,” says Springfield Art Museum Director Nick Nelson. “We are so grateful for the support of the City of Springfield and our community in making this happen.”

The Museum plans to complete all construction of its Master Plan by its 100-year Anniversary in 2028. Construction on the new facility is anticipated to begin in late 2024 or early 2025.  A ribbon cutting for the work on the Museum grounds including Fassnight Creek Stormwater Improvement Project and Museum parking improvements is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, October 15 at the Museum.
