FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UPDATE: Due to rain and wet conditions, construction at the intersection of Mount Vernon Street and Broadway Avenue has been rescheduled to begin 7 a.m., Monday, May 22. The intersection is expected to be closed for improvements for approximately 4 weeks (weather permitting).
Original Release:
The intersection of Mount Vernon Street and Broadway Avenue will close to traffic for approximately four weeks beginning 7 a.m., Monday, May 15 for intersection improvements.
The project will involve the extension of the curb line into the roadway, creating “bulb outs” intended to narrow the road, slow traffic, improve sight distance and improve pedestrian safety. Sidewalk improvements will also be made to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
This project was generated by citizen concerns about neighborhood speeding and sight distance issues at the intersection.
The project is estimated to cost $93,000 funded primarily by Zone 3 Minor Neighborhood Improvement Program funds through the ¼-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax combined with 1/8-cent Transportation Sales Tax Turning Lane and Safety Improvements Program funds.
Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour via New Avenue, State Street and Missouri Avenue.
