Iron Workers Pre-apprenticeship Offered in June
Iron Workers Local 10 Union and the City of Springfield Department of Workforce Development have teamed up to offer two pre-apprenticeship opportunities to learn about careers in the iron working industry while earning valuable credentials.
During the FREE five day training, program participants will earn industry recognized credentials in forklift operation, fall protection in construction, OSHA-10, fire watch and prevention, and aerial/scissor lift training. In addition, a course on introduction to rebar and structural steel will be taught.
Participants can choose one of two pre-apprenticeships offered in the month of June. The first session is June 12-16 and the second session is June 19-23. Both sessions run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and classes will be held at 3737 E. Evergreen Street in Springfield.
“At the Department of Workforce Development, we are intentional about creating equitable pathways into Pre-apprenticeships and Registered Apprenticeships by providing opportunities to individuals that may never have considered apprenticeships as a career option,” said grant coordinator Haley Jones-Sides. “We especially want to reach out to women, as the percentage of women in not just the trades but apprenticeships in general, is low. We are working very hard to change that in our community,” she added.
A pre-apprenticeship is a program designed to prepare participants to enroll in a registered apprenticeships program by offering a base of knowledge about careers in iron working and credentials needed for on the job training to begin. These pre-apprenticeships are part of the $3 million Apprenticeship Building America grant awarded to the City of Springfield Department of Workforce Development from the U.S. Department of Labor.
