Springfield, Mo. – The Springfield Police Department received their 9th consecutive international reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).
Following a multi-year self-assessment phase and a meticulous site-based assessment of community engagement, policy, procedures, equipment and facilities by CALEA assessors, Chief Paul Williams appeared before the commission on Nov. 11, 2023. The commission unanimously voted to approve the department’s reaccreditaton application. Recognized as a meritorious agency, having achieved more that 15 consecutive years of accreditation, SPD is required to apply for reaccreditation and submit to a similar review every four years to maintain accredited status.
“Another successful accreditation review means we continue to provide Springfield with excellent service while following established industry best practices,” Chief Paul Williams said.
SPD is committed to this voluntary accreditation process and to CALEA, the only international organization available that provides such certification and oversight into the standards, policies, procedures and operations of police agencies. CALEA’s purpose is to develop standards based on international best practices in public safety and to establish and administer the accreditation process.
In addition to the department’s success, SPD Accreditation Manager Brandy Osborn was also recognized as she earned the title of Certified Accreditation Manager after successfully completing all aspects of the training required by CALEA.
Part of the accreditation process is the opportunity for public feedback. The online portal is available year-round for public comment. It should be noted that comments will not receive a response other than acknowledgement of the submission. Those wishing to provide feedback directly to the Springfield Police Department can find forms at springfieldmo.gov/SPD.
