FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Springfield Fire Marshals have confirmed that the remains of two individuals were found in the debris of an overnight house fire in north Springfield. Firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire on the 2000 block of North Grant just after midnight Monday. Due to the extent of the damage and structural instability, investigators had to use an excavator and other heavy machinery to recover the victims. It appears the victims were on the first floor of the home towards the center of the structure. The cause of the fire and area of origin are still under investigation.

Preliminary information indicates that while the victims are believed to be the couple living in the home, the Greene County Medical Examiner must confirm their identities, and next of kin be identified and notified, before names will be released.

Three firefighters received minor burns while putting out the fire. All were treated and released from the hospital. Follow Twitter: sgf_fire for up-to-the-minute information on this investigation.
