In 2009, the first diverging diamond interchange (DDI) in North America was constructed in Springfield by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). Since that time, Springfield drivers have had to adjust to the twists and turns of the now five DDIs in the Springfield metro area, but a recent study by the Public Works department indicates that the intersections are far safer than they were before being reconstructed into the DDI design.
