Deadly house fire caused by unattended candle

The Greene County Medical Examiners report shows 24-year-old Timothy L. Stain died of smoke inhalation from a house fire in his home on March 12, 2016. Springfield Fire Department investigators determined the cause of the fire was an unattended candle. The fire started in the living room of the apartment on the 2900 block of E. University. The candle was left burning on the dining room table in close proximity to the back side of a sofa.

Two occupants were in the upstairs bedrooms when the fire began. One of the occupants awoke to the smoke and fire conditions. He was able to escape through a window. Strain was unable to escape.

There were smoke alarms in the residence but the batteries had been removed. There was no sprinkler system in the building.
