FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The second quarter of 2016 saw an overall increase in crime by 2 percent. This is in comparison to the crime statistics of April through June 2015, and it is shown in the Springfield Police Department’s latest Quarterly Public Safety Report.
Crimes against persons increased by 6 percent compared to the second quarter of last year, while property crime increased by almost 2 percent. The increase in the number of reported violent crimes are attributed to an approximate rise of 30 percent in both robberies and rapes during this quarter. Among crimes against property, reports of auto theft dropped by 8 percent while larcenies just slightly increased.
This report also features information about the Springfield Police Department’s focus on partnering with businesses to prevent crime. The department has recently added a crime prevention specialist specifically assigned to “Business Watch,” a program put in place to assist businesses Citywide with proactive measures that can reduce and deter criminal activity.
The SPD began publishing the Quarterly Public Safety Report in October 2013 to increase awareness about public safety issues in the community. In addition to providing crime statistics, the report provides information on innovative programs and highlights of crime prevention strategies.
