The Springfield Fire Department is welcoming several new members to its command staff. After a nationwide search, Fire Chief David Pennington has appointed two assistant fire chiefs, a division chief and two new battalion chiefs to serve the City of Springfield.
Springfield Fire Department (SFD) Division Chief of Training, Olan Morelan, has been appointed as the Assistant Fire Chief of Support Services. Assistant Chief Morelan has served the City of Springfield since 1999. His appointment was effective Aug. 6, 2017.
Chief Morelan began his fire service career with the United States Air Force in 1999 before joining the SFD. He has held the ranks of Firefighter, Equipment Operator, and Training Captain prior to taking over the leadership of the Training Division in 2016. He is a graduate of State Fair Community College, the National Fire Academy Managing Fire Officer program, and is designated as a Chief Training Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
The department is also pleased to welcome Bryan Newberry, who will begin his role as the Assistant Fire Chief of Operations on Oct. 16, 2017.
Chief Newberry began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter with the Nixa Fire Protection District in 1992, and has served as Chief of Department for the Battlefield Fire Protection District since 2010. Chief Newberry served in the United States Marine Corps, and is currently an officer in the Naval Reserve. He has a graduate degree from Grand Canyon University, and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program. Chief Newberry holds multiple designations, to include Chief Fire Officer, from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
“Chief’s Morelan and Newberry were selected from an applicant pool of highly qualified candidates with extensive experience in fire and emergency services” said Chief Pennington. “We are pleased and excited to build the leadership team of the fire department with these two highly qualified and dedicated professionals”.
SFD Battalion Chief, Kevin Trogdon, has been promoted as the Division Fire Chief of the Prevention Division. Division Chief Trogdon has served the City of Springfield since 1996. His promotion was effective Sept. 17, 2017.
Chief Trogdon began his fire service career with the Brookline Fire Protection District in 1987 before joining the SFD. He has held the ranks of Firefighter, Equipment Operator, and Fire Captain prior to taking command of the 1st Battalion, A-shift, in 2009. He is a graduate of Missouri State University, and is a candidate for designation as a Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
Springfield Fire Department (SFD) Fire Captain, Eric Latimer, has been promoted to Battalion Fire Chief and will take command of the 1st Battalion, A-shift. Battalion Chief Latimer has served the City of Springfield since 1998.
Chief Latimer began his fire service career with the Nixa Fire Protection District in 1993 before joining the SFD. Prior to his promotion, Chief Latimer served as the Captain of Rescue 1, and as a Team Leader of the Technical Rescue Team, since 2009. He is a graduate of Western Illinois University, and is currently a graduate student at Missouri State University.
SFD Fire Captain, Heith Aldridge, has been promoted to Battalion Fire Chief and will take command of the 8th Battalion, A-shift. Battalion Chief Aldridge has served the City of Springfield since 1994.
Chief Aldridge began his fire service career with the Western Taney County Fire Protection District in 1991 before joining the SFD. Prior to his promotion, Chief Aldridge served as the Captain of Truck 8, and has served as a member of the Hazardous Materials Team since 1997. He is a graduate of College of the Ozarks, and the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program.
A formal swearing in and pinning ceremony to recognize these individuals is scheduled for 2 p.m., Oct. 17 in the lobby of the Busch Municipal Building, 840 N. Boonville.
