For Immediate Release
Kidde, a fire safety manufacturer, has issued a recall of 40 million fire extinguishers. Springfield residents who received a free fire extinguishers from the Springfield Fire Department from August 2016 through August 2017 may be affected.
Reason for Product Recall
The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard. All affected models need to be replaced.
There have been approximately 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including one fatality, approximately 16 injuries, and approximately 91 reports of property damage.
Who is Affected
Kidde is recalling fire extinguishers from 1973-2017, so any fire extinguishers you possess should be checked. The fire extinguishers that the Springfield Fire Department distributed need to be replaced if they contain one or more of the following model numbers:
AUTO FX5 II-1
Model numbers can be found on the bottom, right-hand corner of the Fire Extinguisher Label, as shown in the picture on the following page. (Note: There are several sets of numbers on the label. You are looking for the Model Numbers to determine if your extinguisher is part of the recall.)

If your fire extinguisher is a model number listed above, you should immediately call Kidde to receive your free replacement fire extinguisher.
Before continuing, locate and collect your Model Number, Serial Number (located above the model numbers), and Date Code (if applicable, it will be printed on the side of the fire extinguisher, near the bottom).
