Gypsy tour tradition comes to the Mother Road during Route 66 Festival this weekend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Along with Aaron Sachs and Associates, Ozarks on Two Wheels joined forces with the 4-3 Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) chapter to create the second annual Route 66 Gypsy Tour Poker Run, a 66-mile poker run along parts of Historic Route 66 in and around Springfield on Saturday, Aug. 13. The 4-3 CVMA are old pros when it comes to gypsy tours, hosting several poker runs a year and donating 100 percent of profits to local veterans. In 2015, the organization raised more than $17,000, with all profits going directly to individuals and their families. “Gypsy tour” is a name given to an organized gathering of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts whose purpose promotes fellowship among riders and encourages public acceptance of the biker community. Its name describes an assembly of riders who travel long distances, often camping together during the journey, to converge at a favorite destination. The first official gypsy tour, held by the Federation of American Motorcyclists, was held in 1917 in Laconia, New Hampshire, although an unofficial gathering of 150 motorcyclists took place the previous year. The term fell out of style in the 1960s and was replaced by “tour” or “rally.” In 1991, the AMA resurrected the "gypsy tour” moniker, although many current rallies have established their own titles. The Route 66 Gypsy Tour Poker Run blends this American tradition with one of the most celebrated icons of the open road. Each year, thousands flock to the storied thoroughfare to take in the sights best viewed on two wheels. Whether a symbol of economic promise, a side-winding artery connecting rural goods with urban sensibilities, or a fractured piece of nostalgia, Route 66 still holds local and international interest despite its missing pieces. The Mother Road draws motorcycle tourists from around the globe, whose love of travel, Americana and motorcycles is reviving communities. Join the 2016 Route 66 Gypsy Tour Poker Run on Saturday, Aug. 13 beginning in the Motorcycle Village (Olive at Jefferson), where you will receive your first card. Stops include Spencer, where you will find the only untouched original Route 66 pavement, Alice & Irene’s Family Diner in Marionville, Denney’s Harley Davidson, and then back to the Motorcycle Village for your final draw. Registration is 8-10 a.m. with the tour running 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Fees are $20 per individual rider; $25 per couple; $5 for an extra hand. The first 200 riders to register will receive a free Poker Run T-shirt. ### For more information, please call Director of Public Information & Civic Engagement Cora Scott at 417-864-1009 or 417-380-3352.
